Local Activities

Nakoma is your basecamp for the Lost Sierra. Day trips to swim and fish in lakes and rivers or hiking and biking on world-class trails are all easily done from Nakoma’s frontdoor. History buffs will love the Western Pacific Railroad Museum and the Gold Rush lore found at Plumas Eureka State Park.

Horseback Riding

There are several stables in the Graeagle area that offer trail rides into the Lost Sierra. Rides last from one hour to more than two hours, depending on the outfitter, and can accomodate kids 7 years old and up. Younger kids can try pony rides. Graeagle Stables and Gold Lake Stables open early summer through Labor Day or into September, depending on the weather.
Mini Golf Summer Activity

Miniature Golf

There are four great golf courses around Nakoma for adults, but that doesn’t mean the kids aren’t left out. The entire family can get in a round of miniature golf just a short drive from Nakoma in the quaint town of Graeagle. The 18-hole mini golf course is a throwback to simpler times and is an inexpensive outing that even the youngest in the family will enjoy. Open in summer.

Birding

The Feather River Land Trust’s Sierra Valley Preserve is the Mecca for birding in the Sierra. The preserve’s wetlands support the greatest diversity of birds in the entire Sierra Nevada — more than 230 species — and are a key stopover on the Pacific Flyway north-south migration route. The preserve provides habitat for sensitive species like greater sandhill cranes, black tern, redhead, white-faced ibis and 200-plus pairs of yellow-headed blackbirds. Fall is raptor time! Be on the look out for bald and golden eagles, short-eared owls and a variety of hawks, including rough-legged, northern harriers and the ferruginous.
