Being

FRANK

AT NAKOMA

Intriguing, captivating and timeless, the teepee-inspired Lodge design was conceived in 1923 by the enduringly brilliant Frank Lloyd Wright and built in the heart of the Lost Sierra in 2001. Wright’s exquisite design includes the distinctive façade that houses a towering four-sided fireplace and the soaring ceiling with stained glass windows and decorative friezes of abstract Indian motifs. Picture windows on three sides of the octagonal room pull in the grandness of the Sierra from without to become the world within.

Design History

Frank Lloyd Wright

As America’s preeminent architect, Frank Lloyd Wright is commissioned to design a centerpiece building for a country club in Madison, Wisconsin. The design never is built, but his plans live on to be built at Nakoma in the Lost Sierra.

FLW Rises

Seventy-seven years after Frank Lloyd Wright submits the design of a clubhouse for a Wisconsin country club that never gets built, the 24,000-sqf building is brought to life by Nakoma Resort’s original developers and opens in Plumas County in 2001. The building is a certified Wright structure by the Frank Lloyd Wright Foundation.

Hotel Opens

Modern Meets Classic

With a nod to Frank Lloyd Wright, the 24,000-sqf, 42-room Inn at Nakoma is completed in the summer of 2015 by the new owners of Nakoma Resort. The Inn is the first new lodging development to open in Plumas County in decades.

An Icon

Wright then. Right now.

Taking cues from Frank Lloyd Wright’s designs, Nakoma opens Altitude, a soaring, light-filled 14,000-sqf recreation center. Altitude offers property owners and resort guests a heated outdoor pool and spa, children’s room, climbing wall, fitness center, 20-seat movie theater, teen center with gaming tables and video games, and the Middle Fork Bistro + Bar.

The statues

The Native American sculptures of Nakoma and Nakomis stand in the Gateway Pool, greeting visitors to the resort. The Nakoma statue is the daughter of the moon and the mother of Hiawatha. Nakomis is the male counterpart to Nakoma.

WRIGHT THEN

 RIGHT

NOW

Frank Lloyd Wright’s vision for Nakoma wasn’t realized until the late 1990s, when the original owners purchased the plan from Wright’s Taliesin architects. As the centerpiece of their 1,280-acre property, Wright’s masterpiece debuted in 2001. The residential offerings, also designed by Taliesin, soon followed, along with the Robin Nelson-designed Dragon Golf Course. Today, the stunning architectural creation sits naturally upon the brow of a hill in the heart of the Lost Sierra.
